HISTORY

KILLQUICK

AT THE TAIL END OF 2001...

Two friends Dave E and Martin, who at the time were members of separate bands; MSD and Beatnik Terrorist, were having one of their many musical discussions when they realised that they were both looking to expand their musical horizons. Meeting at Martin’s house with a bass and guitar (and only kitchen utensils to beat out a rhythm on a chopping board) they used an old 4 track to make their first recording which has since been lost to the mists of time. More than the encouraging result however, was the feeling that both had found the process of creating music together highly liberating, and so they quickly agreed to do it again. With Dave purchasing a drum machine a further evening produced two more songs; The Bad Saviour And The Good Waster and Get So High. Again the results and the highly enjoyable process convinced them to make a commitment to make music together on a regular basis. So in early 2002, with Dave moving into new accommodation coupled with his purchase of software to record digitally, they embarked on two further recordings; We’re Here To Fuck With You and You.Are.Analysing.Me. These two songs signalled the creation of KillQuick’s first incarnation; KillQuick: Kings of Paranoia.

KINGS OF PARANOIA

The KillQuick: Kings of Paranoia recordings are all created from scratch in one evening utilising a rotating group of musician friends. Although the majority were recorded and mixed in one night, some later recordings incorporated re-mixing. The purpose of Kings of Paranoia is to capture the joy of musical creativity by being wholly inclusive and adopting an anything goes philosophy. Although collected into ‘albums’ these songs were not created as albums in the traditional sense (ie. with an underlying theme). The recordings often use different musicians or the same musicians playing different instruments, so there is little continuity in that sense, instead every song on every ‘album’ is in the chronological order that they were created. So please be aware that, although they have played live, KillQuick: Kings of Paranoia are not a band in the conventional sense.

EARLY 2004...

KillQuick decided to get a live band together using regular contributor Taz on guitar and Mike E on drums, both of whom had played in Dave’s previous band. Fantastic progress ensued but an untimely injury to Mike’s hand which had a lengthy recovery period ended what was an extremely promising start. Left frustrated by the unfortunate events the three remaining members decided that they still wanted to get a live band together and so in late 2004 they joined with four close friends to see what would happen. So with Chris on drums, Dave H on acoustic guitar and with the vocal styling’s of both Roland and Adam, they started rehearsing in earnest. When some of the most enjoyable evenings ensued the group began to revel in their new found musical camaraderie by creating new songs at a lightning pace. The first song created during this process; Coming Through heralded the arrival of KillQuick’s second incarnation; KillQuick Collective.

2011...

Although Roland and Adam have stepped away from the band in recent years, in 2011 new member Jon bolstered the KillQuick Collective ranks and although the band are still the live outlet for KillQuick music, conflicting schedules have meant that in terms of the creation and recording of new material, the band are on an indefinite hiatus.

V5

In 2008, having learnt the art of digital recording from Dave, Martin built his own studio called V5 and as well as recording and producing new KillQuick tracks he began making his own recordings. These recordings also utilised his own extended family and friends, many of whom were musicians both established and neophyte. A long gestating re-working of a classic Gil Scott Heron track, renamed; The Revolution Will Not Be Digitised, was his first recording and this was soon followed in 2010 by the first album from V5; Singularity. V5 is a side project and runs concurrently with both KillQuick projects. The purpose of V5 is to involve Martin’s extended family and friends in his musical endeavours and to ensure that every spare moment of his life is filled with the creation of music.

DIAMOND DAZE

In summer 2012, as an antithesis to the nations’ monarchistic celebrations, Dave E, Martin, Taz and Jon decided to celebrate in their own unique fashion by creating the song; Diamond Daze, which announced the birth of KillQuick’s third incarnation; KillQuick: Diamond Gods of Intemperance. The KillQuick: Diamond Gods of Intemperance recordings are created and recorded in the studio. The mixing process takes as long as needed and can involve further recording of overdubs and extensive re-mixing. The purpose of KillQuick: Diamond Gods of Intemperance is to produce new music which strikes the perfect balance between technical ability and pure unadulterated creativity.

KILLQUICK LIVE

In September 2015 KillQuick: Collective reformed to hit the stage again at Scream Lounge in aid of SHHiRT - a charity run by close friends of the band. After months of rehearsals the tunes were sounding tight and the old energy was back as the band performed a high-octane stellar performance featuring hits from various albums. It was great to be playing together again!

Although no brand new tunes were to be created in the following years (daily life kept getting in the way), the band continued to meet for rehearsals and took to the stage most recently at Jon's wedding in May 2017 to play 4 songs to a delighted crowd!

The bug is back!! New music will be worked on next...

20 YEARS OF THE MIGHTY KQ!

Who would of thought way back on the 19th January 2002 when KillQuick:Kings of Paranoia created “We’re Here To Fuck With You” that here in 2022 we would still be fucking with you 20 years later!!

But we get ahead of ourselves… After 2018’s Mementec-ho EP there appeared to be silence but the music creation continued into 2019 with the crackerjack Tombstone EP and even a new live experience was worked on and delivered on New Year’s Eve that year, with big plans for more when some filthy little bug decided to grind the world to a halt! But nothing can stop the behemoth that is KillQuick and during the first infamous 2020 lockdown a new album was created, aptly titled; Sound Of A Lockdown

The nations’ early summer hopes were dashed, with life curtailed further with a second lockdown late in 2020 and early into the following year, but later in 2021, with vaccinations and fresh hope, always optimistic and never undimmed, KQ began creating again and with new recording facilities and a new perspective came a fresh start, with the phenomenal Control Alt Delete EP!

So here we are in 2022, all caught up! Not normally ones for an overindulgence of nostalgia, (a great friend said, “Never less, always more!”), but given KillQuick’s quite amazing longevity and the national zeitgeist of recently dwelling a little too much on the past, we’ve decided to celebrate 20 years with a retrospective compilation called KillQuick or Die XX! 20 years, 20 tracks, with 1 track from every single KQ album or EP created - plus a new track just for this release, and featuring everybody we have had the absolute pleasure of playing and recording with over the years in all of our various KQ guises! Perfecto!!

So, will there be more music? Hah! Is the Pope Catholic!! Of course there will be more!! It’s 20 years and counting baby, with the landmark of 200 KQ tracks firmly in our crosshairs!!!!

And if we can get that filthy little bug under some sort of control, playing LIVE will be absolutely tip-top of the KillQuick agenda! And you can take that to the bank!!

Peace!
